“Twitter, twitter is a ball, yet discretion could save us all!”-Praharshita Krishna

TWITTER-There is a flood of emotions, images, opinions voiced on this beautifully designed masterpiece of a social network whose market shares keep climbing in value.

Yet, the spotlight thrown on it due to recent events can only make us wary of this site.

Wife of Shashi Tharoor (UN-diplomat-turned-union minister) was found dead after her frankly shocking and disconcerting revelations on this website.

Although her anger is palpable ,and yes we feel she may be justified if the allegations flung around are found true, should she really have washed her dirty linen in public?

One cannot ascertain whether her death was in any way connected to those tweets, yet we cannot help wondering…

Mehr Tarar and Sunanda Pushkar seem to find some kind of truce during her last activities on social media.

What is it about this site that makes even the most sensible people let their guard down and expose it all?

Shashi Tharoor an avid user of twitter was in trouble earlier too with his unforgettable reply on being carefully baited by a journalist. His reply being “travelling cattle class out of solidarity with all our holy cows”. Cruelly hinting at another congress member who was travelling in economy on the same day.

There is an old saying-“The road to hell is paved with good intentions”

Twitter too is paved with good intentions(drawing a simile here)

What happened in 2012 was only the tip of the iceberg when two girls were prosecuted for careless and insensitive comments (on facebook) on the death of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s death.

On the one hand I feel that the silly comment online warranted a retaliation in the same format(i.e. online),yet, we are not ready to understand or comprehend that any actions in the virtual world could lead to serious reactions in the physical and very real world (Newton’s third law of discretion on social media) .

This phenomena of self-published stupidity is not isolated to our country (we are not alone-there is unintelligent life out there) what with the first African American US president Barack Obama jovially taking selfies at the funeral of Nelson Mandela which was inappropriate for very obvious reasons.

So when it comes to social media and networking, tread with caution as one moment of unguarded impertinence could ruin your life social or otherwise.

Unwanted detrimental side-effects of (anti)social media
