As the year 2011 rolled in the world population hit 7 billion. Leonardo DiCaprio finally won a well deserved Oscar and for the first time in history, a man married a software.

Here is a list of 19 events that defined our decade:

  1. South Sudan after a 50 year long struggle finally declared independence and became the 54th state of Africa on 9th July 2011.
  2. On the 27th April 2012, the Avengers Assembled for the first time launching what would soon become perhaps the most iconic pop culture franchise of the decade.
  3. #TheWorldIsEnding. We survived the “end of the world” as predicted by the ancient Mayan Calendar.
  4. The Higgs boson particle which is an elementary particle in the standard model of particle physics was discovered in 2012. This particle is also often called the “God” particle.
  5. History was made when the first black President of the United States Mr. Barack Obama was re-elected.
  6. The Malaysian flight 370 mysteriously disappeared in March 2014. This case remains unsolved to date.
  7. Malala Yousafzai became the youngest laureate to ever be honoured with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014
  8. 2014 also saw the emergence of the Ice Bucket Challenge and with its unforeseen success across social media platforms, it also brought on the rise of Challenge Culture. #TidepodChallenge #CinnamonChallenge #ShotGlassChallenge
  9. In 2015 for the first time racially diverse emojis were introduced to the world by Apple.
  10. In September 2015 Gravitational Waves were first directly observed by  Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and was announced to the world 5 months later in February 2016.
  11.  Pokemon Go took the world by a storm in 2016 when it was initially released. It had people jumping out of their couches to get a taste of an all new experience in gaming with its in-game environments which were synced to the players’ local environment.
  12. Moonlight made history by being the first major feature film of the coming of age story of a gay black man. It made history yet again by winning 3 Oscars.
  13. In 2018 for the first time in history, the Prime Minister of a country Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand went on maternity leave.
  14.  At the beginning of 2019, the world saw the first image of a Black Hole. A lot of new opportunities arose.
  15. A piece of history collapsed in front of our eyes as a sudden fire caught the Notre Dame. We also found out that bees can survive smoke as thousands of bees survived that fire.
  16.  As we come to the end of 2019 it is announced that Google achieved Quantum Supremacy. Something which we didn’t think would happen so soon. A very big step for mankind as the possibilities and our limitations have been stretched like never before.
  17. $120,000. That’s how much a man made by taping a banana to a wall.
  18.  Throughout the decade we had major breakthroughs in the medical field, one of the most prominent discoveries is that of targeted treatments to cure cancer. These are methods where a certain specific type of treatment is used based on the type of cancer and the location of cancer.
  19. A discovery of the future. CRISPR technology was invented in the last decade to enable genome splicing and editing. This allowed researchers to easily modify and alter the DNA strands of various organisms and was also used in DNA specific treatments where a specific gene itself was altered to cure a disease.
