I’m sitting on a chair in the front row. There’s a stage 4 feet away from me. Lights go out and a spot light flashes on the host for the night, who starts interacting with the audience and successfully delivering punchlines which no one was expecting. Before calling on the first act of the night he asks me my name and what I do and I tell him. He just gives me an expression showing that he feels sorry for me and that makes the audience crack up.

Watching stand-up comics perform live is not just a different feeling than what we get while watching videos on our screens, it’s an experience! Roaring laughter in the room after every joke makes you realize that so many of you think alike because you can relate to the same thing and don’t you feel more comfortable with others when you know that they’re on the same page as you are?

I’ve been following stand-up comics in India for around 3-4 years now and I remember I used to get so disappointed when they announced their tour schedule only to see that Hyderabad is not on the list. But lately, the comedy scene has been growing so much that the number of ‘open mics’ in the city has been increasing constantly and that led to the birth of our very own dedicated comedy club, Hyderabadass Comedy Club. We now have more than 15 local comedians who have won comedy contests and also have opened the acts (Every comedy special has an opening act to warm up the audience) for other veteran comedians and have been performing all over the country. Being a comedy fan and a stand-up comedian myself, it feels great to know that there are so many places coming up in the city, which as a result has increased the number of large scale shows that are being organized here.

I’m sure that there will many more comedy clubs in the future and that we will get to see many budding comedians perform.
