Teacher’s day is a holiday celebrated in the honour of all the teachers, instructors and disciplinarians. In India, it falls on the fifth of September. It is said that every single teacher you come across, no matter how good (or bad) will have something you can learn from. So to celebrate this occasion, let’s look at some famous yet underrated teachers in pop culture and the lessons they have taught us.
Professor Minerva McGonagall (Harry Potter):
Sure, there are many professors in Harry potter worthy of being on this list, but Professor Minerva McGonagall is the perfect example of “Tough Love”. Her proper and strict demeanor is similar to most teachers we have encountered in our life but she loved each and every one of her students just as much as she inspired fear in them.
Lesson to Learn: Stand up for what you believe in. If you believe that the world we live in is unjust, don’t roll over and accept it. Fight for it. Also, fighting for your life is no excuse to not hand in your homework.
Miss Honey (Matilda):
Another fantastic teacher who is completely different from the one I mentioned above, Miss Honey from the beloved classic Matilda is just as sweet as her namesake. She always made sure that the children in her care were loved and happy and the bond she developed with Matilda is beautiful.
Lesson to learn: Just because your loved ones do not appreciate you, does not mean it’s going to stay that way forever. Things will always get better.
John Keating (Dead Poets’ Society):
No list of influential teachers will be complete without mentioning Robin Williams’ inspiring character John Keating. His students and colleagues at the conservative boarding school are initially wary of John’s unconventional methods of teaching, but he soon wins them over by motivating them to live their life to the fullest.
Lesson to learn: One day, you will stop breathing and your heart will stop beating and you will cease to exist. But until then, the entire world is your oyster. So Carpe Diem! Make your lives extraordinary.
Master Shifu (Kung Fu Panda):
This grumpy red panda is the instructor to the Furious Five. When his teacher, Master Oogway, chooses Po the Panda to be the next Dragon Warrior, he understandably freaks out. But he soon learns about Po’s love for food and trains him specifically (in a hilarious training montage) and learns to love the adorable panda as much as we do.
Lesson to Learn: Sometimes, no matter how learned or wise you are, you can be mistaken. Also, every student has a different method of learning and just because they don’t learn the traditional way, does not mean they have no hope.
