What is a more fun way of spending time other than watching a good movie on a holiday? There’s just something about summer that makes a good film great and a great film unforgettable. But it can be hard to choose which movie to watch first, and the amount of time that we spend finding the perfect movie is insane. Endless scrolling on Netflix, looking for plots, reviews, and ratings, is such a buzzkill sometimes that we end up watching any movie. Though every movie has something unique about it, the satisfaction and joy of watching a good film and relishing the feeling goes unsaid. Cinema is a reflection of our personalities; some relate to it because of their experiences, and others relate to it because of their expectations. These are a few movies that left us in awe and are they worth watching? Go ahead and read to find out!

La La Land is a heartwarming film that takes an unexpected turn towards a bittersweet ending, leaving the audience with a lasting emotional impact. This musical explores the themes of passion, love, dreams, disappointments, and alienation, ultimately highlighting the feeling of not feeling worthy enough in a “City of Stars” where everyone strives to achieve the same dream. The two artists, Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) strive to achieve their dreams in cinema and jazz, respectively. As the characters navigate through the obstacles in their lives, the audience is constantly reminded of the reality of finding peace in following their passions. This film makes for an excellent summer recommendation, as it leaves a cozy, comforting, and thought-provoking cinematic experience.

The Notebook is about two young people, Noah and Allie, who fall in love during the summer and how they deal with their relationship despite many hurdles. It’s an old-school romance set in the 1940s that shows that love doesn’t fade away with age and that destiny only decides whom you meet in life, but it’s only your heart that can decide who gets to stay in your life. Look out for the lake scene, which is insanely breathtaking. It leaves a mark so impactful that it makes you ponder over how “You can’t live your life for others; you’ve got to do what’s right for you even if it hurts someone else’s feelings”. It’s a summer romance that turns into a romance never forgotten.

Welcome to a road trip with Irfan Khan, Dulquer Salman, and Mithila Palkar, capturing the beauty of Kerala and Karnataka. Karwaan is not a typical road trip movie, as the plot revolves around the mix-up of two dead bodies. This journey teaches them about careers, dreams, friendships, relationships, and love. The three of them have very diverse perspectives on life, and how they connect and learn despite the differences in their mindsets is appealing. It starts off as a little boring, but we promise the movie gets a lot more fascinating. Their characters are a delight to watch. With soothing music and perfect framing and cinematography, Karwaan is a feel-good road trip movie to watch on a cozy weekend with your friends and family.

This long yet emotional film, Ante Sundariniki talks about premarital pregnancy and the societal expectations centered around women and their choices. It’s a love story between a Hindu (Sundar) and a Christian (Leela Thomas). Everything that is considered unconventional about a woman is personified through the character of Leela. Sundar, a confused yet charming man, although hailing from a traditional background, supports Leela in her choices. Even if it means facing criticism from his own family. Each time a Veena is played by his grandmother, emotion is conveyed. Not to hurt anyone’s feelings, but the humour used to showcase both the cultures’ traditions and orthodox mindsets is something you’d want to look out for. For the love of Vivek Athreya’s work, this film is a must-watch and is bound to leave a smile on your face.

There’s a lot of beauty and spirituality about mountains that question the point of life, and as the title Yevade Subhramanyam suggests, it is a tale of the self-exploration of Subhramanyam (Nani). He, along with Anandi (Malavika Nair), set out to Doodh Kashi in the hopes of fulfilling their late friend Rishi’s (Vijay Devarakonda) last wish. This story, set in the lakes of the Himalayas, is a perfect summer watch, depicting the beauty of life through adventure, friendship, love, compassion, and values. How the duo of Subbu and Anandi cross hurdles and learn together forms the crux of the story.
